Sadly, occasionally we lose large trees due to the wind and although they leave a hole where they once stood the space does provide another opportunity to replant in its place. However, instead of the wood being taken away or cut up for firewood we try and re purpose any pieces we can. To do this a local mobile sawmill cuts our wood onsite into any thickness or shape our in-house carpenter can utilise for upcoming projects. The drying process can take many years, so it is important to think ahead. You can find many examples of this throughout the garden including the handrails and bridge in the American Garden and the legs of our impressive hanging basket display in our Garden Centre.
In 2021 we started our partnership with Exeter-based Coastal Recycling one of the largest independent recycling companies in Devon. Coastal provides sustainable waste solutions for almost 1600 businesses across our region. They have 30 years of experience, have won three awards in 2023 (including an Exeter Living Award for Sustainability) and have a whole host of accreditations behind them. With their knowledge, experience and commitment to a more sustainable future, they are helping us take our recycling rates to the next level.
As an accredited Botanical Garden, it is important for us to strive towards cleaner and more sustainable practices and in January 2022 we installed two 20kW solar panel systems enabling us to produce over 40Mwh of clean electricity per year.
